Picasso’s works of his first two years in Barcelona can be divided into four categories. First, there are his large paintings, which he did for official contests and to satisfy his father’s demands. These are The First Communion and Science and Charity. (…) The Picasso we see here is the most artificial, false and conventional Picasso. (…) Second, there are the well-executed academic paintings.
